Mentors

If you don’t have enough time to make all of the mistakes other woodturners have made, you’re in luck. Many of our members are willing to share their skills through mentoring or private/group instruction.

Jack Gould offers mentoring to club members only. He prefers to assist new woodturners who need help with the fundamentals of turning. Some of the subjects that can be covered are safety, wood acquisition and handling, recommended tools, elementary tool sharpening, the basics of rough-turning of green wood, bowl turning tips, chucking methods, use of "super glues", and basic finishing procedures. Jack has a good supply of wood to practice with (hickory, sweetgum, maple, and maybe some other species if you catch Jack in the right mood).

The goal of this mentoring is to bring the new turner up to speed on some of the basics, build confidence, and establish skills that they could improve through advanced instruction. Mentoring can be offered during the day or in the evening considering his retired status. Email Jack at rgould@sc.rr.com for further information

Jack's turning skills are on display in almost every Palmetto Woodturners Instant Gallery. He's an excellent teacher and very generous with his time and talent.
